Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) - Oral Health Care Considerations

  • Ascertain if the STD is active or nonactive.
  • Check for oral lesions associated with an STD, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) Camera icon, and human papilloma virus (HPV) Camera icon infections. Be aware that these infections may be transmitted by direct contact.
  • Determine if cardiomyopathy-associated syphilis requires antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures.
  • Address systemic STDs such as hepatitis B infection (HBV) and HIV disease accordingly.
